The soybean seed samples we have received from harvest are looking good. Some mechanical damage is showing up, but the germinations have been good. The lab is busy working mainly on forage and grass samples. Some seed lots are quite weedy because of the wet summer that was experienced in many parts of Western Canada and the delayed harvest. Greetings from the Mississippi River Delta region here in Memphis, Tennessee. Thus far, soybean seed quality has been very good this year with most seed lots germinating in the mid to upper 90% range. Seed lots with lower germination percentages appear to be mostly due to seed that has been mechanically damaged during harvest and/or conditioning. Read More

It has been a very busy late summer early fall seed testing season here at the SGS Memphis Lab. The testing on a large number of bahiagrass samples from the SE States is concluding. Currently, centipede turf grass samples are beginning to arrive at the lab from this region. One grower mentioned that due to the slower new housing market, centipede sod demand is down thus, creating a negative impact on the demand for the new crop seed.

The 2008 International Seed Testing Association ISTA meeting was held in Bologna, Italy. At the meeting the rules were presented and discussed. The ISTA rules are the results of many years worth of research and improvements from the various ISTA Technical Committees. Tim Gutormson, Kalyn Brix-Davis, Laura Carlson and Kari Fiedler are members of the ISTA Proficiency Testing, Variety, Sampling, Germination and Tree and Shrub technical committees. The following rules were presented at the meeting and voted on by 46 voting members. These voting members represent 72 countries.
